Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Black Friday and Cyber Monday, when one hears these two terms, a common thing that pops in their head is big discounts and amazing deals. Today, these two days have become the dream of every shopper. Black Friday has even been registered as the day with maximum shopping transactions in the US since 2005. But both of these weekdays have much more significance than just your excuse for another shopping spree,

Black Friday is celebrated on the first Friday after thanksgiving. There are two different stories for the origin of the term black Friday. In the 1950s, managers of US factories started calling the Friday after thanksgiving “black friday” because workers would make an excuse to take friday off to extend their holidays whereas another story entails that the term “Black Friday” was first used by traffic cops of Philadelphia to describe their day after Thanksgiving as they had to work long shifts in traffic.  Historically, this day is associated with the great financial crisis in the U.S which had an effect on the U.S economy for many years.

Cyber Monday on the other hand is an e-commerce term given to the first Monday after thanksgiving. This term was specially coined to increase sale profits by Elvin Davis of the National Retail Federation. The term was first used during the 2005 holiday season to encourage online shopping. Over time, the term caught on and retailers around the world started offering discounts and deals equivalent to Black Friday on Cyber Monday.

Both these terms have their origin in the U.S but now happen in many countries across the globe. One difference between Cyber Monday and Black Friday is that Cyber Monday was created for the sole purpose of online shopping promotions whereas Black Friday sales go live in both online and offline stores. Although Black Friday remains the busiest day in the shopping world, the emergence of large deals on Cyber Monday has blurred the distinction between these two days. Nowadays, they are both seen as a package of days in the holiday season to get some new round of clothes, jewellery e.t.c.
