Education
Education has a lot of definitions such as it is a process of imparting and acquiring knowledge, it develops the ability of judgement and reasoning and preparing oneself intellectually for mature and successful life. Some people believe that education enables oneself to upgrade socioeconomic mobility and escape poverty.
It is very true that education is one of the strongest elements for improving health, reducing poverty, gender inequality, stability and peace. Education usually takes place under the guidance of an educator but in some cases, learners are also found educating themselves. The methodology of teaching is called pedagogy. Education is imparted either formally or informally. Any experience that has a meaningful impact on the way one feels, thinks, or acts is considered part of their education.
There are different stages of education that come under formal learning. UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) recognises nine stages of education in its International Standard Classification of Education starting from pre-primary education to doctoral level.
Different stages of education:
- Early Childhood Education/Preschool: It includes lower kindergarten and upper kindergarten and extends for the age of 4 and 5 years, old kids.
- Primary education: also called elementary school for 1st standard to 5th standard.
- Middle education: It includes 6th standard to 8th standard.
- Secondary education: It includes 9th and 10th standard, in some countries it is called freshman year and sophomore year respectively.
- Senior Secondary/High School- It includes 11th and 12th standard, and is called junior year and a senior year respectively too.
- Undergraduate study: It is a 3 or 4 years program of obtaining a bachelor’s degree in one’s field of interest.
- Post Graduation: It is a masters program that is generally for 2 years but can vary depending upon the course.
- Doctoral: It is a 4-5 years program that is mainly research-based and very few students opt for this as it can also be very complex at times.
- Post Doctoral: This involves allowing doctoral students to continue their training and gain experience and skills for a successful academic career.
Education has become a basic life skill nowadays and all countries are moving towards its betterment with each passing year especially developing countries, who have made tremendous progress in getting the children to enrol into the classrooms and majority of children in the world are at least getting primary education. Also, just enrolling the students into the classroom is not going to cut the deal, they need to learn and develop skills. Lack of sanitation facilities, trained teachers, inadequate learning material makes the process of learning really difficult for children and the consequences are grave. According to a UNICEF survey, about 617 million children and adolescents around the globe are unable to acquire the minimum proficiency levels in mathematics and reading, even though two-thirds of them are enrolled in schools.
Making effective and smart investments in people’s education is important to end extreme poverty. For this, the first obstacle is to deal with learning crises and help the youth to acquire skills that they need to succeed in today’s competing world.
