How to set up your almirah – Monica Approved Technique
I will make it quick for you. If you want an organized almirah, it’s not that hard if you follow a structure. I have divided the process into three steps.
Sorting
1. Get rid of clothes that are too small or don’t fit. Protip: Try everything before you decide.
2. Sort all of your clothes into categories (pants, shirts, dresses) and put them in appropriate drawers
3. Curate all your clothes into piles – work clothes, casual clothes, formal wear
4. Throw out anything that is torn or damaged.
5. Put away anything you use less than once a month, including seasonal clothing
6. Sort your jewellery, accessories, and makeup – throw away expired and broken products
Cleaning
1. Clean out the almirah by removing anything that is not needed
2. Sanitise the almirah before you start setting it up
3. Use Naphthalene balls in the corners of racks to avoid moths and keep your clothes smelling fresh
Setting up
1. Fold everything neatly to keep it neat and tidy
2. Hang your blazers, coats, and expensive dresses
3. Mark shelves for different clothes. Keep your workwear, casual, and daily wear in different sections
4. Keep your daily wear on the bottom shelves, casual and workwear at eye level shelves
5. Store off-season clothing in a separate bin/box on top of the almirah to save space
6. Use small boxes to store jewellery and accessories
7. Set up jewellery and makeup in a separate drawer
8. Hang up belts, purses, or scarves to little hooks on almirah doors
9. Use separate drawers for storing socks, underwear, and bras
10. Put any jewelry that you don’t wear often in one place so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for
Bonus Step: Maintaining
1. Whenever you use clothes, keep the dirty ones in the laundry
2. Fold and arrange fresh laundry as soon as possible
3. Hang the clothes to save them from creases and wrinkles
4. Always return things back to their places – jewellery, accessories, clothes etc. rather than leaving them wherever convenient
Setting up a messy almirah might seem a herculean task and you might feel overwhelmed as you start cleaning. Keep your calm. Break the task into small modules and you will be ready to go. You can thank me later.
