Knowledge
Knowledge is awareness or familiarity of something or someone such as skills, facts or objects which contribute to one’s understanding. Knowledge can be acquired from unlimited sources including memory, reason, perception, scientific inquiry, education, practice, and testimony. The philosophical study of knowledge is called epistemology.
Knowledge refers to either practical or theoretical understanding of various subjects. It can also be either explicit or implicit, systematic or particular, formal or informal. There’s a difference between true belief and knowledge as philosopher Plato had defined knowledge as “justified true belief”.
Types of knowledge:
- Self-knowledge: It is a knowledge of a person about their own thoughts, beliefs, sensations and other mental states. There are lots of debates going on, on the subject of self-knowledge as to if it is different from other kinds of knowledge or is it more privileged than others.
- Scientific knowledge: This knowledge is based on gathering measurable and observable evidence subjected to principles of sampling, experimentation and reasoning.
- Situated knowledge: This is the knowledge that is specific to a particular situation. It is embedded in one’s culture, language, or traditions. This knowledge is related to the capacity of acknowledgement in human beings.
- Partial Knowledge: In most cases, it is not possible to comprehend information completely, our knowledge is mostly partial or incomplete. Most real-life situations come with incomplete information and have to be handled with the provided knowledge.
Knowledge is the collection of information and skills that a person acquires through experience and intelligence is the ability to apply that knowledge. In 1983, Howard Gardener, an American developmental psychologist described 9 types of intelligence:
- Musical (sound smart)
- Naturalist(nature smart)
- Existential (life smart)
- Linguistic(word smart)
- Spatial(picture smart)
- Intra-Personal(self-smart)
- Logical-mathematical(number smart)
- Bodily-kinesthetic (body smart)
