Types of Content

There are two types of content: online and offline. The term “content writing” has been mainstreamed into the online world but offline content also exists such as newspapers, books, magazines e.t.c.

Physical types of content:

  • Essays: An essay is a piece of writing which presents the author’s arguments and it also does not consist of a definite explanation as sometimes an essay may involve a letter, a pamphlet or a short story. It can be formal or informal depending upon the audience.
  • Quotes: A quotation is a repetitive sentence, phrase, text or speech that someone has already written or said. These are normally used to give examples to support an argument and are often written or spoken by famous personalities.
  • Poems: Poetry is a literary genre in which poems are defined as a piece of writing arranged in short lines to express emotions, thoughts and feelings with a definite rhythm also known as a rhyming pattern. It can be practical or imaginative. Poems are generally considered as an ocean of creativeness, as one can perceive the poem in any form they like and all of them are always open for interpretation.
  • Songs: As bizarre as it may sound, music or songs are also a type of content that brings out the feelings and emotions of a listener. Songs are written by songwriters which can be different from the singers of that song. Now the process of writing a song is quite complex as it consists of various parts, lyrics, composition, tuning, instruments, vocals and rhythm.
  • Plays: A play is an important theatrical tool, it is a drama where characters carry out their dialogues for a theatrical performance. The script of these plays are also a type of content, similarly the script of movies, documentaries can also be regarded as a type of content.
  • Mythological or Religious books: These are books that may have religious importance to specific cultures such as the Geeta for Hinduism, the Quran for Islam, the Bible for Christianism, e.t.c
  • Newspaper: It is a periodical publication consisting of current events and the latest information about various fields such as politics, environment, sports and international relations. Newspapers are printed content but nowadays we can access news through various online websites which will also fall under the category of online content.
  • Research paper: It is a type of essay which explains the topic in detail. Research papers are researched thoroughly thus giving the said names. These are mostly written by scientists or scholars for discoveries or inventions. Source citation and paraphrasing are extremely important in writing a research paper.
  • Books: Books have also not remained very far from the online business. Nowadays, great deals are available on books online, many websites consists of full books, pdf files of books are available and for novel lovers, the kindle has become a popular choice. But all the books online or offline are a type of content that provide knowledge to the reader. Now books have different genres and categories, there are autobiographies, fictional novels, non-fiction, subject related books such as physics, chemistry, mathematics or art e.t.c.
  • Journal: journals are dedicated to a particular field of study with articles of research in a technical language for scholarly audiences so graphs, statistics, charts and tables are quite common. It includes bibliographies and references is signed by the research/expert writers, peer-reviewed, published by academic, professional institutions usually fortnightly or monthly or quarterly. Has minimal ads.
  • Magazines: Articles are short and based on a theme of general interest written journalist and freelancers to update the public on current news affairs, photos are quite common. It is reviewed by editors and published usually fortnightly, monthly or quarterly. Has a lot of ads. covers are glossy and eye-catching.

Digital Types of content writing

  • Blogs: Now a blog can be defined in many forms, sometimes it is classified as an online journal, some use it as an informational website. A blog shows the information in reverse chronological order, which means the latest information will be displayed at first. One can write a blog about their personal lives, a product or any social topic too. There can be a single-author blog or a multi-author blog.
  • Technical writing: The name may seem complex but this sometimes proves to be the easiest content writing if you have profound knowledge of the business or the given product. In this type of writing, one explains how the product, the service, or the business works.
  • Copywriting: This type of writing involves advertisements, product descriptions, sales collateral, and website copy. It focuses on infographics and traditional print media.
  • Social Media posts: These are mainly aimed at promoting different products. As almost 40% of the world’s population uses social media, it provides a huge audience, and it’s important to be aware of the latest trends while creating relevant and platform-specific content.
  • Emails: This type of writing is targeted at loyal customers that keep coming back for more. The information provided through email should keep the customer engaged and interested.
